The Theatre Arts program provides students with an overview of theatre and gives them the opportunity to perform in monologues, small scenes, and major productions. Basic acting skills are developed through vocal training, improvisations, movement, and other drama exercises. Students also learn about lighting, set design, costuming, props, and various other aspects of theatre arts.
The drama studio consists of a classroom area, makeup and dressing rooms, and a flexible staging space suitable for intimate performances. Field trips are taken to drama performances, and guest artists, teachers, and actors are invited to teach classes. A highlight is our annual fifth grade trip tot New york City where students enjoy Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, tour television studios, and attend acting workshops.
Audition requirements include participating in creative drama activities, a dramatic reading, improvisational acting and an interview to determine interest and motivation. Selection criteria include enthusiasm, spontaneity, stage presence, following directions, and the ability to hold the attention of an audience and evoke emotional responses from listeners. PRevious formal dram instruction is not required.
